The Vermont Department of Taxes has announced an important change to the Agricultural Certification process for landowners participating in Vermont’s Current Use Program.
Agricultural Certifications must be completed by November 1, 2026. This year, the Department of Taxes will NOT mail pre-filled Agricultural Certifications to landowners.
Vermont Farm Bureau is encouraging farmers and landowners to take action now and to help spread the word to others who may be affected by this change.
Complete Your Certification Through myVTax
Landowners enrolled in the Current Use Program with active agricultural land and farm buildings are encouraged to complete their Agricultural Certification electronically through myVTax, Vermont’s secure taxpayer portal.
According to the Department of Taxes, using myVTax allows the Department to:
-Process certifications more quickly and avoid postal delays;
-Prepopulate some information based on an existing account; and
-Correspond securely with landowners throughout the process.
Agricultural Certifications must be completed by November 1, 2026.
Paper Certifications Are Still Available
Landowners who prefer to submit their certification by mail may continue to do so using the CU-313 Agricultural Certification form, available from the Vermont Department of Taxes.
If you do not have access to a computer, call the Department of Taxes at 802-828-5860 ext. 2 and request that a blank form be mailed to you.
Don’t Wait for a Form to Arrive in the Mail
This is an important change from previous years: the Department of Taxes will no longer automatically mail pre-filled Agricultural Certifications to landowners.
Landowners should not wait for a certification to arrive in the mail before taking action.
Failure to submit a required Agricultural Certification by the deadline can have serious tax consequences. Vermont Farm Bureau encourages members to complete their certifications promptly and to share this information with neighbors, farmers, landowners, and others who participate in the Current Use Program.
